Filippo experiences art as an intimate dialogue, capable of transforming into perfume. Cardinal Francesco Maria Bourbon Del Monte, Caravaggio's patron, proposed him for the commission in preparation for the Holy Year of 1600. The contract was signed on July 23, 1599, with the commitment to complete the work by the following summer.
